Crowing about Crowlas

A rainy day when you're on a climbing trip is not ideal. But when life gives you rain, go to the pub.

On my way to Bosigran I'd spotted The Star Inn and thought "hmmm...isn't that an old favourite of Boak and Bailey?". In fact, it wasn't. The pub I'd seen was The Star at St Just, but The Star at Crowlas, the pub I was after, was close enough to visit.

Busses in the middle of nowhere in Cornwall are a bit limited so I drove there. Usually this is sub-optimal for pub visits, but in this case it worked out well as on the way from the car park I spotted a brewery! Even better, a brewer who was sitting outside it leapt up so show us round!

Having worked in a few breweries, and with a few miserable bastards, I took this as an exceedingly good sign. Had he been less happy in his job he could simply have ignored us.

They won brewing's highest accolade, the Champion Beer of Britain, last year with Penzance Mild and are currently expanding capacity by adding another fermenter. The mild wasn't on in the pub though, Penzance Potion No. 9 is their big seller, so that's what I went for.

I wasn't overwhelmed with the pub, weird fake beams all over the place.

But the people were friendly and the beer was good, so the pub is well worth a visit.
